My Journey with Yoga and Saucha

YOGA has been a part of my life for over 10 years now. At first, for me, it was a tool, something that helped me navigate difficult situations, kept me moving forward, and provided a sense of stability. ‘Keep it up, and you will be kept up' became my mantra, but over time, I realized that this 'high and happy vibes only' approach, though well-intended, was covering up deeper truths. I wasn’t allowing myself to fully feel, I was numbing myself. The ‘smile through the discomfort’ became a mask. It kept me going, but at the same time, it disconnected me from life. No tears, only a smile. Inside, it felt empty.

Everything shifted when I attended a silent retreat. For the first time, I allowed myself to lean into whatever arose, rather than pushing it away. A deep trust washed over me: What if what is, is just right? The smile of concealment became a smile of permission. From that moment on, yoga was no longer just a tool, it became a way of life. Saucha, the first of the Niyamas in yoga philosophy, is about cultivating purity and harmony, externally and internally. It is the practice of clearing away impurities so that we can align with our purest essence.
